The 1990s saw the growth in popularity of the monolithic plaster homes. The new Christchurch City Plan introduced more demanding height restrictions which forced the lowering of roof lines. Subsequently, pole homes which sat high above the ground became more difficult to design within the new restrictions, and new homes tended to be set down into the hillside.
