With 35 years in his own practice designing over 500 new homes and alterations (as well as a variety of commercial and industrial projects), John brings an exceptional depth of experience to the practice and his clients. He has received numerous regional and national ADNZ design awards for his work and has been recently acknowledged for his enduring work to advocate the rights of those facing insurance issues in Canterbury, earning a 2012 NZIA Presidents Award.

John has used his experience and design expertise as a consultant to several residential subdivisions in Christchurch, and is regularly involved in the drafting of design guidelines and covenants.

In recent years he has further extended his services in various role as assessor for the Department of Building and Housing and the Architects Registration Board and continues to contribute to the New Zealand Institute of Architects and more recently the New Zealand Institute of Building.


More information

John started his own practice in 1976 as John Chaplin Design Ltd, specialising in residential hillside homes and alterations. The practice slowly grew and in 1995, on registration as an architect, changed the name to John Chaplin Architects Ltd.

In 2001 the practice moved into new offices and in 2003 the new practice of Chaplin Crooks Architects was formed with Stephen Crooks as a partner.

John is passionate about the added value that good design brings to any project, of designing for the specific site conditions and the importance of maintaining the clients involvement throughout a project. He has recently qualified as  Home Star Practitioner with the NZ Green Building Council.

  • 1972 - New Zealand Certificate of Draughting ( Arch ).
  • 1982 ~ 2001 - Foundation member of ADNZ .
  • 1994 - Passed NZIA / AERB Joint Special Examination.
  • 1995 ~ 1998 - ADNZ National President .
  • 1995 - Passed Registration as Architect.
  • 1995 - Appointed Architect member NZIA.
  • 1996 - present - NZIA branch committee.
  • 2002 - present - Convener of the NZIA Cant. Branch PSG.
  • 2004 ~ 2006 - NZIA Canterbury Branch chairman.
  • 2005 - Attended NZ Architecture Master class at Awaroa.
  • 2007 ~ 2009 - NZIA National Council member.
  • 2007 - Appointed an Assessor for the NZRAB.
  • 2007 - Elected a Fellow of NZIA.
  • 2007 - Appointed an Assessor for DBH for the LBP regime.
  • 2009 - Appointed member of NZIOB and elected Southern board member.
  • 2010 - Appointed as member of the joint NZIA-NZRAB national panel to the schools of architecture.
  • 2010 - Appointed by the DBH as a QA assessor for the Weathertight Homes Group.
  • 2012 - NZIA Presidents Award
  • 2014 - Qualified as Home Star Practitioner with NZ Green Building Council
